In 1086, King Cnut 4. Svensen of Denmark was murdered inside a church by unruly peasants. This event reflects the religious tension between heathens and Christians in Denmark at the time, as the country was transitioning to Christianity. Cnut's murder and the location of his death in Odense, known as Odinswi or Odins sanctuary, carry heathen significance. Cnut became a saint and took over Odin's role as the patron deity of the royal dynasty. There are also connections between Cnut and Odin in terms of seasonal animism and practices associated with hay harvest.
