In Scandinavia, May 18 is the holiday of St. Eric of Sweden, a marginal saint associated with clan conflict in the 12th century. St. Eric is an example of how medieval Scandinavians reinvented their traditional polytheism into Christian language by creating saints. He can be seen as a reinvention of Freyr, the male god of fertility, with several similarities between the two figures. St. Eric became the patron deity of Christian Swedish kings and had symbolic associations with fertility and agriculture.
