<description>Click the bell icon so you'll know when we add a new video! I reflect on the significance of this Catholic saint associated with the Nordic god Thor. St. Olaf was believed to be a red-bearded troll hunter who wielded an axe. This is an example of how North Europeans blended traditional culture with Christian imagery. Note on Thor month: It has been suggested that the old Danish and Swedish name “Thordmåned” actually referred to an old dialect word for manure (thord) or even tørre (‘to dry’). While I regard these associations as likely, it is vital to remember that words have many meanings, values that may not remain consistent or even related. Discussions of the “real” root meaning of a word are therefore often besides the point. Popular language and mythological language liberally float identification through similarity. I therefore regard the association with the word name of the god Thor to be pretty clear. This is supported by consistency with a whole cluster of religious practices around the time: the Thor-associated rituals on St Peter’s Day (22 February), the Thursdays of Thor, the beer of Thor Month, the general importance of thunder throughout spring, and the many of personifications of thunder associated with this belief. Furthermore, the name form “Thord” with a final “d”, as in the traditional Nordic name “Thordmåned”, is also attested as a name for Thor in Danish medieval ballads retelling the narrative found in Þrymskviða. There are also cases of personifications of the “Thor” in Thor Month similar to the personifications such as Maiden of April or Maiden of May. An old saying personifies Thor Month as a masculine bearded figure by describing the warming weather through Thor Month. The saying goes: “Thor with his long beard calls the children to the wall”, the point being that the Sun wields the strength to make a warm spots by the walls.
